Thanks to the Union of Women Painters and Sculptors founded in 1881 by Hélène Bertaux (1825-1909), women artists now dared to depict more than just miniatures, fans, and bouquets, favoring genre scenes and portraits instead. After studying with her father, then with Félix Barrias (1822-1907), Jules Lefebvre (1834-1912), and Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911), Emilie Guillaumot-Adan became a member of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883. Following in the footsteps of famous society painters such as Jacques-Émile Blanche (1861-1942) and Paul-César Helleu (1859-1927), she mainly exhibited portraits and scenes of Brittany, painted in watercolor or pastel. Although she was a regular exhibitor at the Salon de l'Union des femmes peintres, sculpteurs, graveurs et décorateurs (Salon of the Union of Women Painters, Sculptors, Engravers, and Decorators) from 1896 to 1930, she was absent from the Société des pastellistes français (Society of French Pastel Artists), which, in its thirty years of existence, accepted only two women, Madeleine Lemaire (1845-1928) and Marie Cazin (1844-1924), who were admitted in 1886.
This charming pastel, with its bright, harmonious colors and remarkable freshness, offers us a symbolic glimpse into the artist's private life as she reads in the sunshine at her holiday home.

Henry Ottmann particularly excelled in the pastel technique, as can be seen here.
This is due to the fact that this delicate material obviously lends itself very well to the artist's characteristic vaporous style and manner.
We should also note the great modernity of this landscape and its fades, which go almost as far as abstraction.
Henry Ottmann was born on 10 April 1877 in Ancenis.
He made his debut at the Salon La Libre Esthétique in Brussels in 1904 and took part in the Salon des Indépendants in Paris from 1905, the Salon d'Automne, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and the Salon des Tuileries.
In 1911 and 1912, Ottmann exhibited at the Artistes de la Société Moderne at the Gallery Paul Durand-Ruel together with Armand Guillaumin, Henri Lebasque and others. In 1912, he exhibited at the gallery Eugène Druet.
In 1920, Ottmann exhibited at the gallery Marcel...
