Essay:
This finely composed winter scene by Ferdinand Boberg captures the serene beauty of a snow-covered Swedish landscape. A jetty projects into a frozen waterway, its dark form contrasting against the bright, unbroken surface of ice and snow. The surrounding slopes, soft with drifting snow, are rendered with Boberg’s characteristically sensitive line and delicate washes of blue and grey.
Best known as one of Sweden’s foremost architects, Boberg also created a remarkable body of drawings and watercolors in which he preserved the atmosphere of his country’s landscapes and city views. In this work he demonstrates his gift for distilling a wintry motif into a composition that is at once precise and poetic, transforming a simple lakeside scene into a timeless evocation of Scandinavian winter.
