About the Item
"View of Chequers Court" is an original pencil, pen, and ink drawing by Fiennes Trotman. This drawing was part of the Rothschild collection, and it features an architectural drawing by Trotman and a print image of the Dairy Lodge at Chequers Court designed by architect. E. B. Lamb.
Chequers Court has a long and storied history. It is a 16th century manor house in origin. Lady Mary Grey, great granddaughter of Henry VII, was imprisoned at Chequers for two years by Queen Elizabeth I, after marrying without the monarch's consent. The room where she slept from 1565 to 1567 remains in its original condition. It was gifted to the nation by Arthur Lee in 1917 and has served as the country estate of the British Prime Minister since 1921.
According to the text on the bottom of the drawing, the manor was the seat of Robert Greenhill (Russell). He improved Chequers Court by hiring the architect E.B. Lamb.
The caption reads "This design, by Mr. E. B. Lamb, exhibits the elevation of a Dairy Lodge, erected at Chequers Court, Bucks, for Sir Robert Frankland Russel, Bart. We commend it from its appropriateness to the object, and as an instance of good taste without pretension."
