About the Item
"A Monument to Soap" Chicago Industrial Architecture Drawing
Skillfully rendered architecture drawing by Frank Tim Beatty (American b. 1899 d. 1984.) The scene depicts two skyscrapers under construction in the background with lower factory buildings in the foreground, possibly Chicago's Wrigley building and Tribune Tower under construction with the North Water Street Kirk soap factory (which was demolished in 1929) in the foreground. The drawing is done in a deep black tone, with a mix of crosshatching and gradation providing shading.

Frank Tim Beatty was born in Winnipeg, Canada in 1899. He initially trained in art there before relocating to Chicago where he would continue his training and the rest of his career. He was hired to be a part of the art staff for Popular Mechanics 1931. eventually becoming art director for and working there until 1961. Following his retirement, he focused entirely on his art career, particularly plein air painting and sketching. He was involved in numerous art organizations, including the Artists Guild of Chicago, the Salmagundi Club in New York, the North Shore Art Group of East Gloucester, the Canadian Club, the Chicago Art Club, the Northwest Art League, and as the president of the Palette and Chisel Academy. He exhibited throughout Chicago, including at the Art Institute. He died in 1984.
