About the Item
Signed lower right, 'Georges Rouault' for Georges Dominique Rouault (French, 1904-2002) and painted circa 1965.
Born in 1904, Georges Dominique Rouault worked as a sensitive watercolorist of his native Paris throughout the twentieth century. He developed a distinct modernist style characterized by fresh colors, sensitive tonalities and careful draftsmanship. Rouault applied these qualities to his street scenes and cityscapes, depicting favored locations including Notre-Dame, the Pont Marie, Canal Saint-Martin, and the Place du Tertre. His subjects also included coastal scenes, harbor views, winter landscapes animated with figures, as well as market scenes in Brittany. Throughout a long and successful career, he exhibited widely and he continued to paint well into his nineties. Georges Dominique Rouault is listed in all relevant art reference works, including Benezit 's Dictionary of Artists which provides a signature sample.
