Giuseppe CASCIARO Ortelle 1861 - Naples 1941 A street in Naples Pastel on strong paper 1906 Signed and dated lower left Studio stamp on the back 67 x 43 cm sheet 84 x 60 cm frame Frame with reversed profile, 20th century Good condition, small, barely visible stain in the middle on the left Giuseppe Casciaro was born in Ortelle in the province of Lecce. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples under Domenico Morelli, Filippo Palizzi, Gioacchino Toma. There, he won many distinctions and prizes. He was inspired by an exhibition of pastel drawings by Francesco Paolo Michetti in Naples in 1885 to such an extent that pastel became his preferred medium. Casciaro had his own exhibition of pastel drawings in Naples in 1887. His subjects were typically views in and around Naples and the islands of Capri and Ischia. During the years 1892-96, the artist traveled to Paris where the Goupil Gallery had a one-man exhibition of his work and from whom he received several commissions. In 1900, Casciaro won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. By 1902, he was a professor at the Accademia in Naples and, by 1906, had been appointed to teach Elena di Savoia, the Queen of Italy, the art of pastel drawing. His work was exhibited frequently throughout Europe, and in San Francisco, Tokyo and South America.
