Description:
This rare gouache design by French modernist Guy Nicod celebrates the Challenge Martini International, a fencing tournament held in Paris during the mid-20th century. The poster-style composition captures both the elegance of fencing and the cosmopolitan prestige of Martini
Rossi’s sponsorship of international sporting events.
Executed in strong graphic tones of blue, red, and white, the painting depicts a fencer’s hand grasping a foil, its blade cutting diagonally across the composition. Along the sword are a series of international flags—including those of France, Great Britain, Italy, and the United States—emphasising the global scale of the event. Lettering across the design references the tournament held at Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris from 14 to 16 January, with the support of the regional fencing league of Île-de-France. The Martini
Rossi logo appears discreetly at the side, reinforcing the sponsorship connection between sport, culture, and lifestyle.
Nicod’s use of gouache on paper allows for crisp edges and vibrant matte colours, ideally suited to poster design. His fluid draftsmanship and bold graphic sensibility recall the golden era of European sports advertising, when international competitions were promoted with striking, modernist visuals.
