This vivid cubist gouache by French modernist Guy Nicod depicts a colourful countryside landscape, where geometry and abstraction transform familiar rural motifs into a dynamic composition. At the centre of the scene, a small arched bridge cuts across a bright yellow path, leading the viewer’s eye toward a cluster of houses with bold red and green roofs. Flanking the composition are stylised trees, their rounded crowns segmented into contrasting colour planes of ochre, teal, and terracotta.
The landscape unfolds in angular forms: fields tilt at sharp diagonals, fences slice across the picture plane, and the horizon rises with softly rolling blue hills. Nicod’s handling of gouache lends the piece strong saturation and crisp edges, allowing each colour plane to vibrate against the next.
