Description:
This vibrant gouache by French modernist Guy Nicod presents a cubist interpretation of a rural village, where bold geometry and vivid colour planes transform the landscape into a rhythmic abstraction. At the centre rises a tall church tower, flanked by red-roofed houses and intersected by angular planes of ochre, blue, and white. Surrounding trees are rendered as rounded green discs, their simplified forms contrasting with the sharp, faceted architecture.
In the foreground, a branching tree anchors the left side of the composition, its brown trunk and limbs reaching into the frame like an organic counterpoint to the angular houses. The road curves into the scene from the lower right, guiding the viewer’s eye toward the layered geometry of the village.
