Description:
In this dynamic oil pastel drawing by Guy Nicod (1923–2021), a village scene is fractured into planes of bold colour, angular movement, and near-Cubist geometry. Rooted in the French landscape tradition but filtered through a distinctly modernist eye, the composition plays with perspective and distortion to create a rhythmic, almost musical interpretation of rural life.
The village is nestled into a steep hillside, its forms articulated in a patchwork of blues, reds, ochres and forest greens. The buildings appear flattened and stacked, each roof and wall treated as a separate chromatic shape. A thick ochre road winds dramatically through the foreground, pulling the eye up toward a central red-roofed house flanked by leafless trees.
