About the Item

Title: French River Landscape With Bare Winter Trees And Rowing Boat Watercolour Guy Nicod (French 1923 - 2021) Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size: 16.25 x 20.5 inches (height x width) Provenance: Artists estate, France Condition: fair with age wear, surface creases, and fraying to the sheet edges Description: This delicate watercolour painting by Guy Nicod depicts a quiet French riverside landscape in the muted tones of winter or early spring. The stillness of the river dominates the scene, its reflective surface capturing the pale sky and leafless trees that stand along the far bank in an elegant, almost rhythmic row. In the foreground, heavy-boughed trees with twisted trunks lean over the water, their stark outlines emphasised against the softer washes of the background. Between them, a small wooden rowing boat rests at the edge of the water, tethered yet seemingly waiting to drift into the calm current. The muted palette of greys, browns, and greens underscores the season’s subdued atmosphere, while careful brushwork conveys the reflective quality of water and the texture of the grassy bank. Nicod’s composition balances observation with poetic restraint, showing his ability to shift from cubist and surrealist explorations to finely judged naturalist studies. The painting captures both the tranquillity and solitude of a rural riverscape, inviting the viewer into its hushed stillness. For collectors, this work highlights Nicod’s versatility and makes a strong companion piece to his more experimental works. It is especially appealing to those interested in French river scenes, winter landscapes, and subtle watercolour techniques of the mid-20th century.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...

Barge on the Seine River
By Roland Dubuc
Located in London, GB
'Barge on the River Seine', watercolour on paper, by Roland DuBuc (circa 1970s). The broad Parisian river Seine divides Paris into the left and right banks. This particular scene appears to be well down river beyond the city as the greenery along the banks points to. The Seine’s collection of lovely small towns happily graces its banks and proudly conveys French culture. Of course, the best way to experience all of these towns and villages is on a river cruise. The Seine is second only to the Loire River which is France's longest. It rises 18 miles (30 kilometres) northwest of Dijon and flows in a northwesterly direction through Paris before emptying into the English Channel at Le Havre. The artist Dubuc created many artworks with the Seine as backdrop. You can have this one right in your living room. In good overall condition, the piece is newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. It is signed by the artist in the lower left hand. Upon request a video of the painting may be provided. About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing. He moved to other cities later where he met painters including, among others, Fred Pailhès...
