Description:
This vertically oriented landscape drawing by Guy Nicod (1923–2021) captures the vast, textural sweep of French farmland in early spring. The composition divides into three distinct horizontal bands — each representing a different layer of the rural landscape. At the top, rolling ochre hills and green fields intersect with winding furrows and distant trees, rendered in earthy tones of burnt sienna, forest green, and pale turquoise.
The central band introduces a broad swath of cultivated grassland, its directional strokes suggesting breezes and undulating topography. Below, a field of yellow wildflowers blossoms at the viewer’s feet, with scattered flecks of soft lemon pastel animating the lower portion of the page. A gentle dip in the centre suggests a hollow, pond, or natural depression in the meadow.
Executed in oil pastel on artist paper, the work combines areas of dense pigment with lighter gestural touches — evoking the changing texture of the land and the influence of light and weather.
