This powerful and imaginative modernist gouache design by French artist Guy Nicod (1923–2021) is inscribed verso “La ville, ce monstre dévorant” (translated: “The city, this devouring monster”). The artwork presents a bold allegorical vision of urbanisation consuming nature, rendered in Nicod’s characteristic fusion of graphic design and painterly expression.
At the centre of the composition looms a monstrous hybrid figure built from rows of apartment blocks, roads, and high-rise buildings, its limbs stretching outward with destructive force.
