This striking oil pastel work by French modernist Guy Nicod (1923–2021) features a tightly composed riverside scene, where bold colour and expressive line define a cluster of moored boats beneath a leafless tree.
The composition is divided horizontally by a flowing stretch of water, rendered in shades of deep blue and rose, reflecting the sky and distant landscape beyond. In the foreground, several flat-bottomed rowboats lie pulled ashore, their rhythmic forms drawn in dark angular strokes. These vessels appear to nest within the land’s curve, creating a dynamic tension between stillness and movement.
At the heart of the composition rises a large tree, its bare branches traced in scarlet and black — evoking early spring or late autumn.
