About the Item

Title: Surreal Abstract Landscape with Golden Sun and Blue Figure French Gouache Guy Nicod (French 1923 - 2021) Signed, lower right Gouache on artist paper, unframed Size: 15.75 x 19.5 inches (height x width) Provenance: Artists estate, France Condition: good; strong colour throughout, minor paper toning and light edge wear; overall bright and well-preserved example. Description: This luminous gouache on paper by Guy Nicod captures the artist’s distinctive fusion of surrealism and geometric abstraction. Set against a deep cobalt blue sky, a monumental golden sun and radiant yellow dome dominate the composition, while a robed abstract figure in blue and violet stands to the left, lending the work a sense of mysticism and symbolism. Beneath the glowing orb, a stream of water flows outward, forming a visual axis that unites the painting’s architectural and natural elements. Nicod’s masterful use of gouache creates a luminous, layered surface where translucent washes meet bold, opaque forms. His colour palette—rich with cerulean, ochre, magenta and emerald green—reveals the influence of mid-century French modernism and the symbolist tradition. The combination of celestial imagery, architectural domes, and stylised mountains gives the piece an almost narrative quality, evoking themes of renewal, ascension, and harmony between nature and the spiritual realm. The painting’s dynamic contrasts of warm and cool tones create a rhythmic, dreamlike energy, while the interplay of circular and triangular motifs demonstrates Nicod’s fascination with sacred geometry and the balance of opposites. This work would appeal to collectors of 20th-century French surrealism, modernist abstraction, or those seeking colourful and symbolic art for statement interiors.

Harris, the name under which he painted until the early 1960s when he took the name of Kosh. His paintings span the period 1949-71, and reflect abstract and surreal figurative subjects which include Cleveland street scenes, jazz clubs, and depictions of Christ.” Courtesy of Rachel Davis Fine Art “Beni E. Kosh was born as Charles Elmer Harris, in Cleveland Ohio. He changed his name in the 1960’s, which translates to “Son of Ethiopia”. He rarely exhibited or sold his work and was affiliated with the African-American artists’ “Sho-nuff Art Group” and the Karamu House and studied under Cleveland artist Paul Travis. His style is very diverse and he experimented with Cubism, portraiture and abstractions in series. His paintings span from 1949 – 1971, and reflect abstract and surreal figurative subjects, which include Cleveland street scenes, jazz clubs, and depictions of Christ. He received little recognition during his lifetime and was only “rediscovered” literally days after his death when hundreds of his paintings were rescued by an art dealer.” (Courtesy Pennsylvania Art...
