Hanslip Fletcher (1874–1955) was a distinguished British artist, illustrator, and architectural draughtsman best known for his atmospheric depictions of historic buildings, old streets, and picturesque corners of London and other English cities. Born in London, he trained at the Lambeth School of Art and quickly developed a reputation for his precise yet artistic portrayal of architecture.
Fletcher worked primarily in watercolour, pencil, and ink, often combining careful draughtsmanship with soft washes of colour. His works document many buildings that have since disappeared, making them valuable both artistically and historically. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and several major London galleries, and his drawings were published in books and magazines devoted to the architecture and heritage of England.
His style is marked by fine line work, accurate perspective, and a nostalgic appreciation for the character of old streets, inns, bridges, and parish churches. Today, Fletcher’s paintings are appreciated not only for their artistic merit, but also as charming records of Britain’s architectural past.
