About the Item

A Charming, Picturesque 1945 Landscape Watercolor of Calais, Vermont, The Artist's Studio, by noted Chicago Artist, Harold Haydon (Am. 1909-1994). For many years, Haydon and his wife, Virginia enjoyed the summer months away from Chicago at a beloved old farmhouse studio in the small rural town of Calais, located just north and east of Burlington and Montpelier. Haydon created many of his best works there, where he could freely experiment with the creative, artistic process, away from his teaching and writing positions during the busy school year. Artwork size: 8 x 10 inches, unframed, mounted / floated to an archival mat board measuring 11 x 14 inches (Ready to frame). Signed with initials and dated "HH Sept. 1945, lower right. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Harold Emerson Haydon was born in 1909 in Fort William, Ontario, Canada. He moved to America, settling in Chicago with his family in 1917 and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. Haydon attended the University of Chicago Lab School and the University of Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Philosophy. He also studied at the Art Institute of Chicago in the early 1930s. Haydon became a Professor of Art at the University of Chicago from 1944-1975 and later taught as an instructor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1975-1981. From 1975-1982, Haydon also taught as an Adjunct Professor of Fine Arts at Indiana University. He is recognized for his vibrant, painterly landscapes of New England, Vermont and Canada, as well as his dynamic urban views of the city of Chicago and its picturesque lakefront. Harold Haydon served as the respected, longtime art critic of the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper from 1963-1985. He died in Chicago in 1994.
