French Barbizon School watercolour on paper view of a church and its tower in a landscape by Henri Clamen. The painting is unsigned but was acquired from the artist's atelier with other signed works. To the back of the paper is another painting, a botanical study of a mountain gentian flower.
A charming view of a fine stone Gothic style church with its tower and spire. Surrounding it are the fine wrought iron crosses of the churchyard so typical of French churchyards. In the background the landscape moves to the surrounding hills. The artist has created a wonderful perspective. Clamen's light, free, impressionist style and his use of colour gives a vivacity and movement to the composition. A little jewel of a painting.
