About the Item
Henry Miller (American, 1891 - 1980) was an American writer and artist, celebrated for his semi-autobiographical novels and watercolors. Born in Manhattan, NY, he studied at the City College of New York and formed notable friendships with Anaïs Nin and Lawrence Durrell. His literary work blends character study, social criticism, mysticism, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, influenced by Dostoyevsky, Balzac, Huysmans, and Nietzsche. Miller lived in Big Sur, California, and his art and writings are held in the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas and the Henry Miller Museum of Art in Ōmachi City.
