About the Item

This artwork "Golden Gate Park, San Francisco" c.1960 is a watercolor on paper by noted California artist Henry Waltermar Doane, 1905-2002. It is signed by the artist at the lower right corner. The artwork size is 14 x 18 inches, framed size is 21 x 25 inches. Framed in original brown and black wooden frame, with off-white matting and green color fillet. It is in excellent condition, the frame have very small minor restorations, practically invisible. About the artist: Born in Cambridge, MA on Oct. 20, 1905. Doane came to California in 1907 and studied at the CCAC, the Rudolph Schaeffer School of Design in San Francisco, and privately with Charles Horton, Otis Sheppard, and John Gerrity. Upon his retirement in 1969, he had worked for over 40 years in display advertising. From 1952-79 he conducted watercolor workshops in Virginia City, NV. Over the years he acted as juror for art shows throughout northern California. His paintings won many awards at the Lodi Grape Festivals, California State Fairs, and Alameda County Fairs before his death in Newman, CA on Aug. 24, 2002 His work is held in numerous collections nationwide.

About the artist: Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa. Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men.
