Lovely watercolor of an ivy covered villa near Prague, Czech Republic by J. R. Williams (American, 1935 - 2006). Signed by the artist left margin. Presented in a painted black and gold frame. Repair to paper tear, upper center. Image, 21"H x 14.19"W.
James Russell “J. R.” Williams was a highly regarded Aptos, California watercolorist. J.R. was born in Oakland, CA, December 13th, 1935. After graduation from high school in Placerville, CA he completed studies at Sacramento City College and the Art Center of L.A. He served in the US Army for two years and eventually settled in Aptos, where he resided for 46 years. He retired from Santa Cruz County as a cartographer and surveyor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, fly-tying, golfing, and coaching Little League baseball. His early interest in art led to a life-long involvement with the arts which included his affiliations with the Santa Cruz Art League, the Mountains Art Center in Ben Lomond, CA and the Pajaro Valley Arts Council. His well-respected portfolio allowed him to participate in the Open Studio Tour for many years. He died on August 30, 2006 at age 70.
