Description:
In this cityscape drawing, Jan Matulka uses a familiar Cubist approach to deconstruct an urban city scene. Though Jan Matulka often maneuvered through different styles throughout his career, one he continued to come back to is the Cubist one shown in this piece. With no organic lines to supplement the piece, Matulka breaks the city street down into linearity and saturated earth tones. The analytic approach to drawing seen here is reminiscent of many other Analytic Cubists such as Duchamp, Picasso, and Gris.
On the reverse of this piece, we see a vibrant still life of a pineapple, some fruits, and fabric. In this still life Matulka embraces a more traditional form of representational art, engaging with a typical genre of practice. The forms and shapes, however, are anything but dull, with the pineapple’s leaves feeling almost alive against the dark blue of the background.

Jan Matulka
Matulka studied at the National Academy of Design before traveling to the American Southwest, where he grew inspired by Native-American and Hispanic cultures. Matulka used this inspiration upon returning home to create representational yet distorted artworks. Matulka fluidly oscillates between abstraction and figural painting. He has had many solo exhibitions across NYC and has had his work displayed in notable locations such as The Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
