Signed lower right, 'Picot' for Jean-Claude Picot (French, born 1933), and painted circa 1985; additionally titled, verso, 'La Route Vers St Jean Cap Ferr'.
Beginning in 1947, Picot exhibited internationally at over fifty one-man shows including in the United States, Belgium, Norway and Australia. Primarily a self-educated artist, Picot briefly attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rouen before leaving to develop his own particular Post-Impressionist style. He was influenced by the works of the Fauves, particularly by Vlaminck, Derain, and Matisse, whose work was drawing widespread attention for its revolutionary combinations of color, texture, and abstract form. For many years, Picot lived part of the year in the South of France and, for his subjects, drew on the sunny beaches and busy harbors of the Côte d'Azur.
