Jongkind was born in Lattrop, in the eastern part of The Netherlands, in 1819. After his father died in 1836, he moved to The Hague to attend drawing studies at the Academy of Arts. His first training took place with Andreas Schelfhout (Dutch, 1787-1870). In 1846 he moved to Paris and worked under the genre painters Eugène Isabey and François Picot. In 1848, he started exhibiting in the Paris Salons and his work was well received by the influential critics Charles Beaudelaire and Emile Zola. His paintings were appreciated by Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny, but his work owes more to the atmosphere-conscious 17th-century Dutch landscapists than to his French contemporaries. He chose as subjects scenes along the banks of the Seine River, picturesque old quarters of Paris, the seacoast of Normandy, and views of Dutch canals.
In 1878 Jongkind settled at Côte-Saint-André (Isère), where he continued to paint the scenes of seacoasts and ports for which he is famous. Jongkind’s legacy is an important one. He is remembered as a painter and printmaker whose small, informal landscapes continued the tradition of the Dutch landscapists while also stimulating the development of Impressionism; he was referred to as “the father of the modern landscape” by Édouard Manet.
This watercolor likely depicts a view of the Schie river from the artist's home in Overschie, a suburb northwest of Rotterdam where he stayed with his niece. At the time of this painting, Jongkind had already been living in France for the past 20 years, yet he would often revisit and repaint these earlier Dutch scenes from memory. Recurring use of quintessential Dutch motifs, the sailboat and windmill, appear consistently throughout his watercolor works well into the final years of his life.

Herman Ten Kate spent most of his life in The Hague although he did occasionally travel to Amsterdam and Haarlem. He was a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam in 1847. He was a student of Cornelis Krusemans from 1837 to 1841. Ten Kate generally depicted friendly genre scenes as well as scenes with soldiers inspired by the 80 years war. His work is generally of watercolor and lithographs.
Our sheet offers a quiet scene in which two gentlemen are featured, each sporting the extravagant hats, vests and tall boots typical of the 19th century, inspired by the 17th century Guardroom scenes. One man rests against the back of a chair, his face marked with a serious expression, his left hand gesturing toward the other man seated at the table. The seated figure wears a rather bemused expression as he composes a letter, apparently taking delight in his endeavor. The two figures are surrounded by various objects cluttering the room, which Ten Kate employs for the specific means of compositional balance.
