John Cuthbert Hare
John Cuthbert Hare (American, 1908-1978), was an artist and painter primarily known for his watercolor paintings of seascapes, harbor
marine scenes, and boats, but he also did watercolor
oil landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, village
townscapes, still lifes and European scenes. He was associated with the New England area, especially Cape Cod, Massachusetts where he spent his summers from 1938 to 1965. However, he spent some time in Florida where he was a member of the St. Augustine Art Association, and other locations on the East Coast. Hare was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1908. He first studied commercial art in Brooklyn at the Pratt Institute for three years and also studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan, as well as the Grand Central School of Art in NYC. He worked for Hearst newspapers corporation, and in 1933 married. In the next few years, he and his wife traveled extensively in the United States and abroad in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland and England, camping and painting and exhibiting his work in many galleries. In 1935, they visited St. Augustine and an exhibition of his watercolors was held there in the old bank building by the cathedral. In Provincetown, they also exhibited paintings that Hare had completed in Florida. The couple liked St. Augustine so well that they returned two years later, joined the Art Association, and set up a studio at 33 Aviles Street. About 1938, the Hares, attracted to the rolling farmland, moved to Amherst, Massachusetts. He also painted at Gloucester, and from 1967 to 1977, they lived at Yarmouthport, and in 1977, moved to Palm Beach, Florida where he died three years later. His work is in the collections of the Lowe Art Museum and the Lightner Museum in Florida, and the Smith College Museum of Art in Massachusetts.

William (Bill) Paxton 1930—2007
William Paxton, born August 5, 1930 in Lewiston, was one of Maine’s top selling artists. He had a passion for painting and from a young age he was known for his talents in sketching. Paxton captured many popular Maine scenes with watercolor, acrylic, and oils. His work also includes historical scenes he referenced in books from as early as the 1920’s, painting locomotives, aircraft, and war scenes. Paxton’s art is sold all over the world.
As a student at Bridgton Academy, he was featured in his yearbook. It states, “When artist Bill picks up his pen, we all stand at attention, for his remarks and pictures are certainly worth mention.” He wanted to pursue a career selling his art, but it was during the time of the Great Depression.
Also in his younger years, Paxton had an interest in skiing and won a medal for Second Highest Ski Jump. From there he went to flying and received a certification for Second-in-Command, to fly alongside the captain in a C-46F type of aircraft. He then joined the Air Force in the 40’s, although his passion and talents for art were constant throughout his life.
Paxton quickly became the front line military sketch...

PROVINCETOWN HOUSES
Located in Portland, ME
Cadmus, Egbert (American, 1868-1939). PROVINCETOWN HOUSES. Watercolor on heavy paper. Signed in watercolor, lower left. The scene depicts a dune with a group of houses beyond, and then, further away, the water. 18 x 22 1/8. inches (sheet). A small loss to the paper at the left edge, else in excellent condition.
Egbert Cadmus is remembered as the father of Paul Cadmus, though he had a distinguished career in his own right. There is a portrait of Paul by Egbert dated 1926, and we've seen other Provincetown drawings dated 1927, so apparently the family summered there for several seasons. In 1931 Egbert Cadmus moved to Lyme Connecticut...
