Louis Sylvia (1911-1987) was an American painter specializing in nautical scenes during the 20th century. Sylvia grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. His father had been a sailor, so the ocean would always appeal to Louis Sylvia. He got his artistic education from the Swain School of Design, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. In Sylvia’s early life, he was a prominent sailor going on many expeditions. His main genres for painting were ships and the ocean. He was also a landscape painter and painted pictures of the coasts and harbors. In Sylvia’s later life, he was a teacher in his hometown of South Dartmouth, Massachusetts. He opened his studio, welcoming over a hundred students, and got interviewed in 1975. (Bio sourced from 1000 Museums)

He was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 2, 1858, and lived in Chicago and then in 1889, settled in Bronxville, New York. Gay was a pupil of Paul Brown and Henry Elkins in Chicago.
