'The Terrace', watercolour on art paper, by Maurice Savin (circa 1950s). An inviting scene from the South of France depicts a quiet sun terrace on a balmy day with azure skies. The viewer is invited there to sit, relax, breathe the fresh air and take in the pleasurable lifestyle that is the South of France. The artist's keen eye captures the essence of the scene with broad and colourful brushstrokes, the pencil lines of the original sketch provide a sort of frame for the chairs and table. The artwork derives its beauty from its simplicity while the artist succeeds in transporting the viewer to a better place. That is always a good thing. Newly framed and glazed. The work is in good vintage condition commensurate with age. The piece bears the stamp of the artist's authenticating authority in the lower right hand corner. About the Artist: Maurice Savin (1894-1973), born in small town France, Moras-en-Valloire, Savin was a graduate of the School of Decorative Arts in Paris, was a painter, ceramist, engraver, sculptor, illustrator, lithographer, furniture decorator, painter of tapestries and stained glass boxes. His artworks express his love for country scenes, and vineyards and he is further known for his portraits of female nudes. Savin is a complete artist. He exercised his talents in multiple media where shapes and colours, lights and movements harmonise, strengthen, and released his vision - realistic but sensitive - into a very personal poetry. He dies in Paris in 1973. His hometown named one of its principal streets, Rue Maurice Savin.

Maurice Savin
Maurice Louis Savin , French born 1894 and died 1973. He was known for painiting, prints, engravings, and ceramics. Savin began his career as an illustrator and as a cartoonist. Savin exhibited at the Salon de Independants, and the Salon d'Automne.He strived to reduce and synthesize his color palette to what he called Light Color by using only seven colors. His art reflects golden colors and soothing light in which he described as The Golden Age.
