Description: A striking and unusual portrait study by French Post Impressionist painter Pierre Neveu, this expressive watercolour and gouache piece explores a more abstract and experimental side of the artist’s practice. Unlike his architectural scenes and plein air landscapes, this work focuses on the human figure, capturing a softly rendered female face emerging from a swirl of vivid colour.
The right side of the composition presents the delicate outline of a woman’s head, her features suggested with minimal yet confident lines. Warm orange and deep magenta tones sweep across her face and hair, creating a sense of emotion and atmosphere that borders on Expressionism. Surrounding her is a wash of turquoise, violet and olive green pigment, applied in loose, spontaneous strokes that enhance the dynamic, improvisational quality of the study.
The left half of the sheet remains largely untouched, offering a bold contrast between absence and intensity — a hallmark of many artists’ working sketches. This incomplete structure lends the piece a raw, intimate feel, revealing Neveu’s process of exploring ideas, forms, and palettes outside his more formal paintings.
