About the Item

Title: Apt Countryside Farmhouse Landscape Watercolour French Post Impressionist Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 5 x 7 inches Signed: inscribed lower left Apt route de l’hôtel Condition: Good overall with light handling to the sheet edges and the natural deckle of the paper; colours remain fresh and surface is sound, consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: A lyrical watercolour by Pierre Neveu capturing the rustic charm of the Provençal countryside near Apt, in the Luberon valley. The composition centres on a farmhouse with a distinctive red-tiled roof surrounded by lush greenery and ochre fields, with blue-tinged hills fading into the distance. Neveu’s expressive yet economical brushwork allows light and air to move through the landscape, creating a composition that feels spontaneous, sunlit, and deeply rooted in place. His palette—muted greens, dusty golds, and pale blues—evokes the warm atmosphere and soft haze of a summer afternoon in Provence. This work embodies Neveu’s Post-Impressionist sensibility, balancing structure with freedom, and observation with memory. The use of transparent washes over finely textured paper gives a shimmering depth to the landscape, echoing the plein-air traditions of early 20th-century French art. Pierre Neveu (b.1929) studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, earning recognition for his refined landscapes that celebrate the architecture, light, and colour of France’s southern regions. This unframed watercolour from the artist’s estate is an elegant and tranquil view of Apt, ideal for collectors drawn to French regional painting and the enduring beauty of Provence. Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
