Description: This atmospheric watercolor and gouache by Pierre Neveu depicts a quiet stone passageway in Bargemon, a historic hill village in the Var region of Provence. Known for its medieval streets, vaulted passages, and sun-baked stone houses, Bargemon is a favourite destination for travellers seeking authentic Provençal character. Neveu’s handwritten inscription “Bargemon” at the lower right confirms the location and adds strong SEO value for collectors searching specifically for artwork of this village.
The composition centres on a beautiful arched entranceway leading to a flight of stone steps. Two terracotta pots filled with greenery sit at the top of the stairs, drawing the eye into the glowing, sunlit interior courtyard beyond. To the right, a wrought-iron handrail climbs the wall, while to the left, whitewashed façades with shutters frame the view. Warm ochres and earth tones in the masonry contrast with the cool greys of the shaded ground, all set against a vivid turquoise Mediterranean sky.
A precise graphite grid is visible across the sheet, revealing that this is a preparatory study for a larger finished work. The grid, along with Neveu’s energetic underdrawing, offers a fascinating glimpse into his process of planning perspective, proportion, and light before scaling up a composition.
Ideal for collectors of Provence village scenes, French architectural studies, Mediterranean alleyways, and Post-Impressionist process works, this painting combines strong sense of place with insight into the artist’s craft.
Pierre Neveu (b.1929) trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, later becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibiting widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français. His landscapes and village scenes are admired for their luminous colour and structural clarity.
Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation, this Bargemon study is a characterful example of Neveu’s Provençal work.
