About the Item

Title: Blue Fishing Boat Low Tide Harbour Scene Coastal Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on card, unframed Signed: Inscription lower right illegible Size (H x W): 5.75 x 9.75 inches Condition: Good overall, with light edge wear and gentle surface rippling consistent with age. Colours remain fresh and strong. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This expressive coastal watercolor by Pierre Neveu captures a striking blue fishing boat resting on the sand at low tide, rendered with the artist’s signature balance of architectural precision and spontaneous colour washes. Neveu frequently explored rural villages, harbours, and everyday working scenes across France, and this marine subject reflects his talent for elevating ordinary moments through elegant composition and a refined Post-Impressionist sensibility. The central vessel is painted in bold tonal layers of turquoise, ultramarine, and deep navy, creating a strong focal point against the softer neutral tones of the harbour and sky. A wooden ladder leans against the hull, suggesting maintenance, preparation, or the quiet rhythm of life between fishing trips. Behind it, a smaller yellow-and-brown boat adds a contrasting note of colour, reinforcing Neveu’s intuitive feel for balance and visual harmony. The sky is handled with loose washes of grey, buff, and blue, evoking the shifting light of a breezy day along the French coast. Ink linework provides structure throughout the composition—seen in the rigging, the silhouette of the deck, and the detailed shadows cast on the sand. These gestural marks are characteristic of Neveu’s studio watercolours, many of which combine fluid washes with decisive draftsmanly strokes. Pierre Neveu (b.1929) trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, later exhibiting widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received the prestigious Gold Medal in 1994. His works are admired for their clarity of form, vibrant palette, and ability to capture the essence of French landscapes and coastal life. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.

Beached Fishing Boats on Mediterranean Shore Coastal Watercolour by Pierre Neveu
By Pierre Neveu
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
Title: Beached Fishing Boats on Mediterranean Shore Coastal Watercolour by Pierre Neveu Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 8.75 x 6 inches Condition: good overall; clean surface and bright palette with minimal handling marks. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: In this exquisite Mediterranean harbour scene, Pierre Neveu captures a row of fishing boats resting on the sun-bleached shore — their hulls painted in vivid blues, yellows, and reds, glowing against the white sand and turquoise sea beyond. The composition balances stillness and vitality: the boats lie quietly in the midday heat, yet every line and shadow suggests movement, texture, and light. Neveu’s masterful handling of watercolour transparency lends the work its distinctive luminosity. Cool washes of aquamarine and indigo melt into warm ochres and siennas, evoking the sharp coastal light of the French Riviera or southern Italy. The artist’s loose, confident brushstrokes and layered perspective show both precision and spontaneity — hallmarks of his plein-air approach. The painting embodies Neveu’s fascination with everyday maritime life, transforming the humble working boats of the Mediterranean into studies of rhythm, geometry, and colour harmony. There is an intimacy here — a sense of the artist pausing mid-journey, quietly observing the relationship between land, sea, and human craft. This is a quintessential Neveu composition: joyful yet restrained, rooted in observation yet lifted by artistic freedom. A perfect choice for collectors of vintage coastal paintings...
