Description: A vivid and atmospheric Paris night scene by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), believed to depict the illuminated Boulevard Haussmann and the grand dome of Printemps, one of the city’s most iconic department stores. Painted in expressive washes of violet, ultramarine, and magenta, the work captures the electric pulse of Paris after dark — a city alive with reflections, motion, and architectural splendour.
Neveu’s assured command of composition and light is on full display. The building’s illuminated façade curves rhythmically into the distance, framed by stark, leafless trees and figures rendered in gestural brushwork. The street’s glossy surface and glowing reflections reveal a masterful understanding of how artificial light interacts with watercolour — a challenging balance that Neveu achieves with apparent ease.
Stamped “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu”, this work forms part of the artist’s personal studio collection. Trained at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Neveu later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and was awarded the Gold Medal of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).

About the Artist: Roland DuBuc (1924-1998), French artist, the sixth of 13 children and son of a construction worker. The very precariousness of the family's financial situation forced him to go to work at the age of 14. In extreme poverty, he moved to Rouen where he was lodged by the Salvation Army. During that time he struck up friendships with several artists who gave him advice and taught him techniques of drawing.
