Description: This expressive village street scene is an original watercolour by Pierre Neveu, executed in 1982 and inscribed “Cadenet 31.7.82”, identifying the subject as Cadenet, a historic hilltop village in the Luberon region of Provence.
The composition focuses on the angular geometry of closely packed village buildings, with overlapping rooftops, chimneys, and sloping walls arranged in a dynamic, interlocking structure. Neveu uses confident ink lines to define architectural edges, while layered watercolour washes in warm terracotta, grey, and muted ochre evoke sunlit plaster and aged stone.
The narrow street curves gently through the foreground, casting cool shadows that contrast with the sun-warmed façades above. Above the rooftops, a clear Provençal sky is rendered in soft blue washes, providing balance and breathing space within the tightly framed composition.
