Description: A striking French village street scene by Pierre Neveu, depicting the sunlit charm of Castellar—a historic hilltop commune near Menton on the Côte d’Azur. Neveu’s watercolour masterfully captures the Mediterranean atmosphere of this Provençal setting, with its narrow cobbled street, domed chapel tower, and ochre-toned façades bathed in afternoon light. A single cypress tree rises behind the buildings, silhouetted against a brilliant blue sky, giving the composition a sense of depth and stillness. The artist’s crisp draughtsmanship and fluid washes reveal his training in architectural drawing, while his expressive use of colour and light reflect the lyrical sensibility of the French Post-Impressionist tradition. The play of shadow along the stone walls and pavement lends the piece both structure and intimacy—a quiet moment suspended in time. Neveu’s work often celebrates these everyday yet timeless scenes of southern France, where sunlight transforms the ordinary into something poetic. Pierre Neveu (b.1929) studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, gaining recognition for his refined landscapes and atmospheric village views. Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing. Some of his exhibits include Invite d'honneur, Salon de Margency (1998); Nolan-Rankin Galleries Houston, Texas (1997); Kulturklub des Europäischen Patentamt Munich (1987); Beernau Foret-Noir (1985); and Marie de Tour-sur-Marne, Champagne (1983).
