About the Item

Title: Champs de Grasse Provence Landscape French Post Impressionist Watercolour Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 8.5 x 6.5 inches inscribed lower centre Champs de Grasse Condition: Good overall. Vibrant colour and clear definition with slight surface wear consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: A luminous French Post-Impressionist watercolour landscape by Pierre Neveu (French, b. 1929), inscribed “Champs de Grasse” along the lower edge — likely referencing the Provençal town of Grasse, celebrated for its rolling fields, olive groves, and lavender valleys. The inscription is partially stylised but consistent with Neveu’s known handwriting and his fondness for southern French subjects. Rendered in fluid, expressive washes, the composition captures the rhythm and colour of rural Provence. Twisting olive trees cast soft shadows over a sunlit path, leading the eye through alternating bands of green, violet, and gold. The brushwork combines precision with spontaneity, typical of Neveu’s confident command of watercolour and light. His palette — rich with blues, greens, and warm earth tones — conveys the heat and fragrance of the Mediterranean landscape. A graduate of the École Boulle and later Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris, Pierre Neveu’s work bridges classical technique and modernist freedom. His landscapes evoke both structure and emotion, rooted in the geometry of nature and the poetry of light. An exceptional piece for collectors of Provençal art, French modernist landscapes, or expressive works on paper celebrating the enduring beauty of southern France.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
