Description: This atmospheric Provençal landscape is an original watercolour by Pierre Neveu, depicting the wooded surroundings of the Château de Cadenet, a historic hilltop site overlooking the Durance valley in southern France. The work is inscribed by the artist, firmly anchoring the composition to this recognisable location within Provence.
Neveu frames the distant landscape through a dense foreground of trees, their twisting trunks and branching forms drawn with expressive black ink lines that cut dynamically across the surface. Layered washes of deep green, olive, and blue create a richly textured canopy, partially obscuring glimpses of the hills and plains beyond. Through breaks in the foliage, bands of pale earth tones and soft blues suggest cultivated land and receding horizons.
The artist’s confident handling balances structure and spontaneity, with controlled drawing set against fluid, atmospheric colour. Ink lines energise the composition while the watercolour washes soften transitions, producing a sense of movement and shifting light. The foreground trees act as both compositional anchors and expressive gestures, guiding the eye inward toward the expansive Provençal landscape beyond.
This signed and inscribed work exemplifies Neveu’s mature landscape style, combining strong draughtsmanship with an intuitive sense of place. It will appeal to collectors of French Post-Impressionist watercolours, Provençal landscapes, and European works on paper with identifiable geographic significance. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.
