Description: A striking French coastal view by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), this original watercolour and gouache depicts the picturesque harbour of Pornic, a historic seaside town on the Atlantic coast of Brittany. The scene is dominated by the Château de Pornic, its elegant turrets and slate roofs rising above the waterfront as boats cluster in the sheltered marina below. Neveu’s distinctive compositional balance and bold use of colour lend the work both vitality and architectural poise.
The artist’s palette—vibrant cerulean blues, deep greens, and touches of coral—captures the distinctive luminosity of Brittany’s seaside towns, where whitewashed façades and terracotta rooftops shimmer in the clear ocean light. The harbour’s surface, alive with reflections and rhythmic brushstrokes, reveals Neveu’s sensitivity to movement and atmosphere. His blend of gouache and watercolour creates depth and texture, evoking the interplay of light across water and stone.
Pornic, located in the Loire-Atlantique region, has long been a muse for French artists and travellers alike, admired for its romantic castle, scenic quays, and sailing heritage. Neveu’s interpretation situates the viewer at the edge of the quay, gazing across a vibrant tableau of masts, reflections, and architectural charm.
Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris and later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A recipient of the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994, he is celebrated for his modernist approach to landscape and maritime subjects. This coastal composition, sourced directly from the artist’s estate, embodies the timeless elegance of mid-century French watercolour painting.
