Description: A striking architectural watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), this original work captures the medieval ramparts and château tower of Vannes, one of Brittany’s most historic towns. Painted in luminous washes of grey, green, and blue, the composition focuses on a rounded stone turret rising above manicured gardens, framed by shadowed walls and the sculptural silhouette of a pine tree. The interplay of architectural solidity and fluid brushwork reflects Neveu’s signature ability to balance structure and atmosphere.
Vannes, located in the Morbihan region of Brittany, is celebrated for its fortified walls and half-timbered houses, as well as its proximity to the Gulf of Morbihan. Neveu’s depiction of the château tower distills the town’s character—part coastal serenity, part medieval grandeur—into a composition of poetic restraint. His use of gouache enhances the contrast between light and shade, while transparent watercolour layers reveal subtle shifts in tone across the stonework and sky.
Trained at the École Boulle and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, Pierre Neveu became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited widely at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, where he was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994. His body of work often explores French architecture and landscape through a post-impressionist lens, emphasising compositional rhythm and tonal harmony.
This watercolour, sourced directly from the artist’s estate, is a fine example of Neveu’s mature style—ideal for collectors of French architectural art, Brittany landscapes, or mid-century watercolours with strong sense of place and history.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
