Description: This radiant landscape by Pierre Neveu captures a panoramic view “sous Chateauneuf”—meaning the scene looks up toward or is situated below the hilltop village of Châteauneuf, one of the most picturesque perched communes of Southern France. Known for its sweeping vineyard slopes, Mediterranean colours, and views reaching toward the distant sea, the region provides the ideal subject for Neveu’s lyrical, light-filled watercolour style.
The composition opens with a foreground of wooded greens and inky shadow tones, leading the viewer’s eye upward toward terracotta rooftops scattered across rolling hills. Neveu’s palette blends soft olive greens, sunlit yellows, rich violets, and crisp Mediterranean blues, capturing the warm complexity of the Provençal countryside. The deep blue horizontal band at the top suggests the glimmering coastline or distant sea—a feature characteristic of Châteauneuf’s elevated vistas.
One distinctive detail is the presence of grid lines and diagonal compositional guides, drawn in graphite across the entire scene. These indicate that the piece served as a preparatory study for a larger painting, offering rare insight into Neveu’s compositional planning. Quick, energetic pen and brush marks animate the trees, rooftops, and cultivated fields without sacrificing clarity of form.
Neveu’s expressive touch brings movement to the pine branches in the left foreground and the clustered foliage on the right, framing the luminous landscape beyond. This balance between structured planning and fluid painterly execution is typical of his best field studies.
Pierre Neveu (b.1929) studied at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts, later earning numerous distinctions including the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994. His Provençal and Southern French landscapes remain especially sought after for their colour, clarity, and strong sense of place.
Unframed and ideal for bespoke presentation.
