Description: A luminous architectural landscape by French Post-Impressionist Pierre Neveu, this watercolour captures the Tuscan-tinged charm of Clisson, a celebrated town in western France. The composition rises from a glassy river—where the village and church are mirrored—toward terracotta-roofed houses clustered around a slender bell tower framed by tall, cypress-like trees. Neveu’s confident pen work fixes the geometry of the facades and rooflines, while layered washes of emerald, indigo and warm ochre bathe the scene in Mediterranean light. Faint grid lines across the sheet reveal the artist’s preparatory process, suggesting this may have been a study for a larger canvas.
Clisson is renowned for its Italianate character—terracotta tiles, classical lines and riverside vistas at the confluence of the Sèvre Nantaise and Moine—making it a natural fit for Neveu’s interest in colour harmony and strong composition.
