Description: This charming French coastal scene by Post-Impressionist artist Pierre Neveu (b.1929) captures the windswept beauty of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, a small seaside town on the Emerald Coast of Brittany. Painted in delicate layers of watercolour and gouache, the work depicts rolling sand dunes scattered with grasses, rustic fencing, and a pair of beach huts overlooking the calm turquoise bay. In the foreground, a lone coastal pine leans into the breeze, its dark branches adding rhythmic contrast to the pale sand and soft blue horizon.
Saint-Briac, known for its historic fishing harbour and panoramic views of the Channel Islands, has inspired generations of French painters, from Renoir to Signac. Neveu’s interpretation distills that artistic legacy into a modernist yet serene composition, celebrating Brittany’s natural geometry and ever-changing coastal light. His palette—muted ochres, seagrass greens, and ocean blues—evokes the tranquillity and freshness of France’s northern seaboard.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris, later serving as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A regular exhibitor at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, Neveu received the prestigious Gold Medal in 1994. This work, sourced directly from the artist’s estate, is a fine example of his mastery in translating everyday landscapes into lyrical, contemplative compositions—ideal for collectors of French coastal art or interiors inspired by natural light and quiet sophistication.
