About the Item

Title: Evening Harbour Scene Brittany Coast Watercolour Seascape by Pierre Neveu Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on card, unframed Size (H x W): 6.75 x 9 inches Inscribed: Illegibly inscribed lower right Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and slight edge wear consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: A captivating twilight harbour view by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), part of the artist’s celebrated series of French coastal watercolours. The work is inscribed Porsine (illegibly), consistent with several other pieces from the same collection that depict Brittany’s small Atlantic ports. Neveu captures the fleeting light of evening with a mastery of tone — the last glow of day reflecting across calm water as the village settles into stillness. The composition balances soft washes and precise line work, a hallmark of Neveu’s mature style. The indigo and violet sky merges seamlessly with the reflections of whitewashed houses and a single steeple rising at left. A yellow moored boat provides a focal accent amid cool blue tones, anchoring the tranquil composition. Neveu’s approach blends spontaneity with structural awareness: his ink drawing provides rhythm and clarity, while the layered washes evoke both atmosphere and depth. The resulting effect is one of quiet lyricism — a poetic distillation of light and architecture at dusk. Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He later became Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, earning the Gold Medal in 1994. This evocative watercolour exemplifies Neveu’s deep connection to coastal France — a meditative, painterly reflection of sea, light, and memory.
