About the Item

Title: Expansive Hilltop Village View Countryside Fields Trees and Sky Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 6.25 x 8.75 inches Condition: Good overall, with expected studio handling marks. Visible graphite grid lines across the composition from the artist’s working method. Occasional paint splashes, light toning at the edges, and minor surface wear. Colours remain strong and saturated. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This atmospheric watercolor by Pierre Neveu captures a sweeping view over a French hilltop village and its surrounding countryside. Typical of Neveu’s plein-air practice, the work combines expressive colour with fluid, economical draftsmanship. The printed text “Champs-Élysées par Pierre Neveu” along the left margin identifies the sheet as one of the artist’s reproduced working surfaces from his studio output, used here for a fully realised landscape study. Neveu layers transparent washes of green, gold, blue, and violet to build an impression of distance and depth, allowing the underlying graphite grid to remain visible. This grid—present in many of his preparatory and compositional works—shows how he structured his vistas before committing them to larger paintings. The resulting piece has an immediacy and freshness that collectors value in his landscape sketches. The village itself is nestled among dense trees, broken rooflines, and hillside contours painted with loose, confident strokes. The tower-like form rising from the centre-right of the composition anchors the scene, suggesting one of the rural communes of southern France where Neveu frequently worked. Above, the sky is rendered in layered washes of turquoise, mauve, and soft grey, giving a sense of changing weather and open air. This work exemplifies Pierre Neveu’s ability to balance spontaneity with structure, making it a compelling choice for collectors of French landscape painting. Its wide horizontal format and vivid palette offer an expansive window onto the countryside, unframed and ready for personalised presentation.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.
Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
