Description: A serene and luminous coastal scene by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), depicting a whitewashed harbour town along the French Atlantic coast — likely in Brittany, where the artist frequently painted during the latter part of his career. The inscription at lower right appears to read Porsine, consistent with Neveu’s series of works inspired by the small fishing ports and tidal inlets of the Breton coastline.
Rendered in delicate washes of blue, turquoise, and soft grey, the composition captures the stillness of the harbour under a bright but clouded sky. The tightly clustered buildings rise in tiers from the water’s edge, their reflections shimmering faintly across the glassy surface below. Neveu’s controlled yet expressive use of line and wash brings structure to the scene while retaining a sense of spontaneity — hallmarks of his plein air approach.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, later serving as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. A member of the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français, he received the Gold Medal in 1994.
This watercolour exemplifies Neveu’s gift for translating the quiet poetry of coastal France into colour and gesture. Its understated elegance and gentle luminosity make it a fine example of his work at its most contemplative.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
