About the Item

Title: French Castle Towers Winter Trees and Blue Sky Landscape Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artist paper, unframed Size (H x W): 7.25 x 10.75 inches Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks and the faintest hint of edge wear, consistent with age. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This striking watercolour and gouache landscape by Pierre Neveu captures a French château set against a vivid winter sky, its warm stone towers rising elegantly behind a network of leafless trees. Painted with Neveu’s characteristically expressive line and confident sense of structure, the composition balances architectural precision with the fluid spontaneity of watercolour, creating a scene that feels both atmospheric and grounded in place. The château—with its steep terracotta roofs, turreted towers and pale yellow stone—suggests the type of medieval or Renaissance buildings found throughout the Dordogne, Burgundy or Loire Valley. Neveu positions the viewer at a slight distance, peering through winter branches and early-season foliage, evoking the quiet stillness of a countryside walk. Deep greens and earthy browns anchor the foreground, while bright sky blue washes fill the upper half of the composition, creating a strong contrast that enhances the warmth of the stone. Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and later at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. Best known for his post-Impressionist landscapes, vibrant architectural scenes and rhythmic handling of colour, he exhibited widely at major French salons including the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Français. His work remains admired for its lively draftsmanship and ability to convey place with clarity and emotion. Ideal for collectors of French landscapes, château paintings or architectural studies, this evocative work offers a beautiful glimpse of historic rural France, ready to frame and enjoy.

Trees in a French Country Landscape. Watercolor.

A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...
