Description: A delicate plein air study by Pierre Neveu (b.1929) capturing a rural French château surrounded by rolling countryside and clusters of trees. The painting likely depicts a Loire or Burgundy landscape, recognisable by its distinctive château towers and steep red-tiled roofs.
Neveu’s fluid watercolour technique is on full display here — transparent washes define the sky and fields, while more opaque tones articulate the dense foliage and architectural forms. The composition remains deliberately loose and exploratory, revealing pencil underdrawing and restrained use of pigment, suggesting this was a preparatory sketch made on-site before a larger studio piece.
The warm terracotta roof contrasts beautifully with the cool greens of the foreground meadow, while the soft blue sky and pale violet clouds hint at the luminosity of late afternoon light. Pierre Neveu studied at the École Boulle and École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, where he later served as President of the painting section. His work is celebrated for its architectural fluency, sense of atmosphere, and sensitive rendering of the French landscape.
