Description: An elegant and atmospheric architectural study by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), depicting a French château overlooking a calm river or canal. The work, likely completed en plein air, reflects Neveu’s continued fascination with the dialogue between architecture and landscape. Executed in watercolour and fine ink, the composition captures the quiet grandeur of the château’s towers and slate rooftops, softened by foliage and reflected light.
Neveu’s palette — soft ochres, greys, and cobalt blues — conveys both the solidity of the stone structures and the transient movement of water below. The presence of a moored boat in the foreground adds a human dimension to the otherwise tranquil architectural scene. The sheet retains perforations along the left margin, indicating it was painted on-site within the artist’s sketchbook, lending the work a sense of immediacy and authenticity.
Pierre Neveu trained at the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, before becoming Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris. He exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, and was awarded the Gold Medal in 1994.

Pierre Neveu was born in Paris. He was a professor of Drawing.
