Description: A contemplative watercolour study by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), depicting a château overlooking a reflective expanse of water beneath a soft grey sky. The composition, rendered in cool tonal washes of slate, viridian, and muted ochre, reveals the artist’s process through faint graphite guidelines and proportion markings. These structural lines, rarely preserved in finished works, highlight Neveu’s meticulous planning and balance between precision and spontaneity.
The château, with its pointed turrets and riverside setting, evokes the Loire Valley or Brittany’s fortified manors, subjects Neveu frequently explored. Unlike his sunlit harbour scenes, this work captures a subdued, introspective atmosphere — the stillness of water and sky distilled into near abstraction.
Bearing the printed studio mark “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu”, the piece likely originates from Neveu’s sketch archive. Trained at the École Boulle and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Neveu exhibited widely, earning the Gold Medal of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994.
This rare study offers a glimpse into Neveu’s working practice — a serene and analytical exploration of architecture and reflection that bridges observation and composition.
