Description: A radiant coastal watercolour by Pierre Neveu (b.1929), capturing the distinctive light and architecture of the French Atlantic coast, most likely in Brittany or Loire-Atlantique. The composition presents a charming seaside villa perched above the shoreline, framed by trees and bathed in late afternoon light. Below, the warm ochre path leads the eye towards the turquoise sea, where distant sails glimmer under a clear horizon.
Neveu’s mastery of plein air technique is evident in his confident brushwork and lyrical control of colour. The artist balances loose washes with fine architectural line work, creating an impression both spontaneous and carefully observed. His treatment of light — particularly the contrast between the sunlit façade and the cool shadows — evokes the atmosphere of a tranquil summer day by the sea.
Bearing the printed studio mark “Champs Élysées par Pierre Neveu”, this work likely originates from the artist’s professional archive. A graduate of the École Boulle and École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Neveu served as Professor of Drawing for the City of Paris and exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and Salon des Artistes Français, earning the Gold Medal in 1994.
