About the Item

Title: French Garden Terrace Yellow House Sunlit Umbrellas Table and Chairs Watercolor Artist: Pierre Neveu (French b.1929) Medium: Watercolour on artists paper, unframed Size (H x W): 6.25 x 9.75 inches Condition: Good overall, with light handling marks, edge wear, and scattered graphite sketches integrated into the composition. A few small surface scuffs and faint smudges consistent with an on-site study. Colours remain vibrant and paper is stable with no tears or structural concerns. Provenance: From the artist’s studio sale in France; all works by this artist in our collection originate from the artist’s estate. Description: This expressive French garden terrace scene by Pierre Neveu beautifully captures the ambience of a sunny courtyard framed by parasols, outdoor seating, and the warm façade of a traditional Provençal house. Neveu’s ability to combine quick observational drawing with confident colour washes is on full display here, creating a lively study of light, shadow, and domestic outdoor life. The composition centres on a small metal café table surrounded by delicately sketched chairs, their forms suggested through loose graphite and ink lines. Above, a group of ochre and golden-yellow parasols provide fragmented patches of shade, their irregular shapes painted with soft transitions of grey, olive, and warm brown. These overlapping umbrellas create a layered canopy that guides the viewer’s eye across the scene. Behind the terrace, the sunlit yellow house glows with Mediterranean warmth—its shuttered windows, doorway, and climbing foliage painted in a mixture of transparent and opaque washes. Neveu incorporates visible pencil underdrawing and gestural marks throughout, allowing us a rare glimpse into his plein-air process. Areas of the foreground are rendered in deep greens and muted earth tones, capturing the freshness of the surrounding garden. The interplay of quick sketching and looser watercolour defines Neveu’s spontaneous approach, making this an evocative study of a French courtyard and the familiar charm of outdoor summer living. It is a wonderful example of the artist’s sensitivity to architectural forms filtered through relaxed, fluid brushwork. Pierre Neveu (b.1929), trained at the École Boulle and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, received the Gold Medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1994 and remains celebrated for his vibrant architectural and landscape watercolours. Unframed and ready for bespoke presentation.

Garden Entrance - Architectural Watercolor Painting
By Mclean Jenkins
Located in Atlanta, GA
"Garden Entrance" is a watercolor painting featuring subtle hues of green, blue and yellow. This work is framed measuring 15.5 by 14 inches. McLean Jenkins is inspired by the work of JMW Turner, Richard Diebenkorn and Louis Khan. McLean Jenkins is a practicing architect and his work derives from and celebrates the classical forms of his trade. Working in graphite, ink and watercolor, McLean employs a gestural approach that frees his hand to explore a subject’s essence. His compositions rely on the quick, decisive sketch and are then given over to the whims and splashes of watercolor. Spontaneity, movement and spirit are all emphasized and his drawings collectively form their own narrative of his passion for architecture. The city of Venice has captured McLean’s imagination since his first trip there as a 12 year old boy. Over the years a kind of courtship with the city has evolved, and its impact has motivated and sustained his development as both architect and artist. His work depicting the city has been recognized within the architectural profession by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in its award to McLean of the J. Neel Reid...
